The social hierarchy that is school labels and defines students. That girl you called a slut in class today. She’s a virgin. The pregnant girl walking down the street. She got raped. The boy you called lame. He has to work every night to support his family. That girl you pushed down the other day. She’s already being abused at home. That girl you called fat. She’s starving herself. The boy you made fun of for crying. His mother is dying. You think you know them. Guess what? You don’t. You don’t know their stories, so why bully them and label them for being different. People know that bullying is wrong so why do they continue to do it: for power, masculinity, status, the fascination of winning? Women and men have different ways of bullying. Women are more catty and tends to use words more than violence. With women its all about social groups and power through popularity. They will bully people below their group because they have direct social control and will neutralize someone that goes against the norm of the school hierarchy. With men, it about showing masculinity and strength (Mathews). The social stratification is that jocks and cheerleaders have the most power in the school. Girls tend to bully other girls indirectly through the peer group. Rather than bully a targeted girl directly, girls more often share with other girls and boys hurtful information about the other girl. For example, a girl may tell a group of girls an embarrassing story about another girl.
